What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia Trachomatis is a bacterium and causes a sexually transmitted infection(STI). In fact this is the commonest cause of STIs in Ireland (especially among those aged under 25). It is estimated that it does not cause any symptoms in up to 20% or more of women and up to 50% of men. However, it is a disease which can cause serious health problems especially in women. Infection with chlamydia can damage the fallopian tubes and cause fertility problems for a women. In men, infection with chlamydia may cause both infection and inflammation in the prostate and testes.

Chlamydia infections represent the largest number STIs in Ireland. Luckily for most, it is also one of the easiest to treat, if caught early.

What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacterium which is a sexually transmitted disease. It can cause an infection not just in the penis but also the testes and prostate in men and in the vagina, womb and fallopian tubes in women. In addition it can also survive in the mouth and throat (after oral sex) and in the anus and rectum (after anal sex). As with other STIs it can cause fertility problems in women. Despite the development of antibiotic resistant forms of this bacterium, it can be treated with single doses of an appropriate antibiotic which is usually given by injection into the buttock.

What does a home STI kit test for?

We currently offer a range of STI home test kits that test for HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B/C. When you receive your test kit, it will contain simple instructions to help you collect a sample for testing. You will need to use a swab or collect a sample of blood or urine. This will allow us to test for the above-mentioned infections.

How do I get my results?

To protect your privacy, we will share your STI test results with you via your Webdoctor.ie Online Patient Portal. This is completely confidential and you can review your results at a time and place that suits you. To view your results, simply log into your account using the “Login” button at the top of this page. Once you have entered your details, you will find your results and details of your previous treatments.

What if my results indicate a sexual health issue?

Once your results return from our partner laboratory, one of our GPs will review them. If your test indicates that you have an STI/STD, our doctors will advise you of the next steps and provide treatment as appropriate.
