What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia Trachomatis is a bacterium and causes a sexually transmitted infection(STI). In fact this is the commonest cause of STIs in Ireland (especially among those aged under 25). It is estimated that it does not cause any symptoms in up to 20% or more of women and up to 50% of men. However, it is a disease which can cause serious health problems especially in women. Infection with chlamydia can damage the fallopian tubes and cause fertility problems for a women. In men, infection with chlamydia may cause both infection and inflammation in the prostate and testes.

Chlamydia infections represent the largest number STIs in Ireland. Luckily for most, it is also one of the easiest to treat, if caught early.

What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacterium which is a sexually transmitted disease. It can cause an infection not just in the penis but also the testes and prostate in men and in the vagina, womb and fallopian tubes in women. In addition it can also survive in the mouth and throat (after oral sex) and in the anus and rectum (after anal sex). As with other STIs it can cause fertility problems in women. Despite the development of antibiotic resistant forms of this bacterium, it can be treated with single doses of an appropriate antibiotic which is usually given by injection into the buttock.

What is HIV?

This is another sexually transmitted infection and is caused by a virus called the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus infects the immune system cells and effectively ‘disables’ the immune system so that the body’s ability to fight infections is diminished. Consequently relatively minor infections can be potentially life threatening. The development of specific anti-viral treatments has transformed this from a once fatal disease to a chronic illness.

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease mainly spread by intimate contact, including oral and anal sex. It is a bacteria passed via direct contact with a syphilis sore. Sores usually occur in the mouth, vagina, anus, rectum or external genitalia. Unfortunately, sores often go undetected because they are painless and can cause long-term complications that can be avoided once treated with medication early.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a highly infectious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus which affects the liver. Hepatitis B can result in a an acute and severe sudden illness where the liver is inflamed by the viral infection, stops working and causes liver failure. Acute hepatitis B infection does not normally require treatment but in some cases could require antiviral treatment. Chronic hepatitis B however does require treatment. It is also worth knowing that there is a very effective vaccine available available against Hepatitis B, which you should consider in certain cases based on your lifestyle.

What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C infection is a slowly progressive disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus. It is a highly variable and unpredictable condition with effects of the infection varying from causing no symptoms to full blown liver failure or primary liver cancer. There is no vaccine available (unlike the virus that causes Hepatitis B) and up to recently there was no cure either. However recently a treatment has become available which has a cure rate of 95%. However this is not widely available as it involves a course of 12 weeks of treatment and is very expensive.

Which test should I buy?

You’ll be asked to select which STIs you would like to be tested for. If you have any pain or any physical manifestations (e.g. sores, discharge or weeping), please go and see your GP for a face to face consult for a physical examination.
